Learn to Swim Course Descriptions
     
Parent & Child A
(6-24 months)
This course is designed for you, as a parent, to participate in your child’s first swimming experience. In this four session course, you will learn and practice techniques of water locomotion and safety with your child without forced submersion. Class size—4
 
Preschool 1 (Pre 1)
(2 - 3/4/5 years)
  For you little one who has little or no previous water experience and who may be hesitant to put his/her face in the water. This course is geared to help students gain confidence through activities. Class size—2
 
Preschool 2 (Pre 2)
(2 - 3/4/5 years)
  This class is for young swimmers who are comfortable in the water and will place their face in the water without hesitation. We will work on learning to swim “ to “ a designated area and back safely. Pre 2 will also work on arm strokes and kicking as well as floating on front and back. Class size—2
 
Preschool 3 (Pre 3)
( 4/5 years)
  Pre 3 swimmers are swimming short distances unassisted free and back. These kids are very confident in the water and love to swim underwater and pick up toys with their hands. We work a great deal on stroke mechanics and proper kicking. Students are introduced to breathing as well as fly wiggle and breaststroke. Class size—2.
 
Level 1 –
Intro to Water Skills
(5/6-12 years)
  Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side. Blow bubbles through mouth and nose. Bobbing Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects. Front and back glides and floats. Recover to vertical position. Roll from front to back and back to front. Tread water using arm and hand actions. Alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front and back . Alternating and simultaneous arm actions on front and back. Combined arm and leg actions on front and back. Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency and knowing how to call for help. Class Size—2
 
Level 2 –
Fundamental Aquatic Skills
(5/6-12 years)
  Pre-Reqs: Valid American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills certificate OR Successful demonstration of all certification requirements from Level 1

Learning Objectives: Enter and exit water by stepping or jumping from the side,Fully submerge and hold breath Bobbing , Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects,Front, jellyfish and tuck floats Front and back glides and floats ,Recover to vertical position ,Roll from front to back and back to front ,Change direction of travel while swimming on front or back ,Tread water using arm and leg actions ,Combined arm and leg actions on front and back ,Finning arm action ,Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency, knowing how to call for help and perform simple nonswimming assists ,Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety ,Learn to look carefully before entering the water ,Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation . Class Size—2
 
Level 3 –
Stroke
Development
(5-12 years)
  Prerequisites: Valid American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills certificate, OR Successful demonstration of all certification requirements from Level 2

Learning Objectives: Enter water by jumping from the side. Headfirst entries from the side in sitting and kneeling positions. Bobbing while moving toward safety. Rotary breathing. Survival float. Back float. Change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back. Tread water. Flutter, scissor, dolphin and breaststroke kicks on front. Front crawl and elementary backstroke. Learn to look carefully before entering the water. Learn to perform simple nonswimming assists. Learn to recognize, prevent and respond to cold water emergencies. Class Size—2
 
Six & Seven
Swim Team
  This course is developed to meet the needs of 6 and 7 years old who swim on a Summer Swim Team. Free, Back, Breast and Butterfly stroke mechanics are addressed. This is a small group lessons for swim team kids only! Class size—4
 
Eight years Plus Strokes
(8 yrs+strokes)
(8-18 years)
  Course for swimmers 8 years plus who are continuing to acquire and improve the 4 basic swim team strokes butterfly, backstroke, breast and free. Course size—4.
 
Level 4 –
Stroke
Improvement
(appx. 7-12 years)
  Prerequisites: Valid American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 3: Stroke Development certificate OR Successful demonstration of all completion requirements from Level 3.

Learning Objectives: Headfirst entries from the side in compact and stride positions. Swim under water. Feetfirst surface dive. Survival swimming. Front crawl and backstroke open turns. Tread water using 2 different kicks. Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly. Flutter and dolphin kicks on back. Learn to look carefully before entering the water . Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation. Learn to perform simple nonswimming assists. Learn about recreational water illnesses and how to prevent them . Class size—4
 
Level 5 –
Stroke
Refinement
(appx.8-12 years)
  Prerequisites: Valid American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4: Fundamental Aquatic Skills certificate OR Successful demonstration of all completion requirements from Level 4 .

Learning Objectives:
Shallow-angle dive from the side then glide and begin a front stroke. Tuck and pike surface dives, submerge completely. Front flip turn and backstroke flip turn while swimming. Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly. Sculling. Learn to look carefully before entering the water. Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation. Learn to perform simple nonswimming assists. Learn about recreational water illnesses and how to prevent them. Learn how to call for help and the importance of knowing first aid and CPR. Learn basic safety guidelines for participating in aquatic activities at waterparks . Class size—4
 
Level 6 –
Swimming and Stroke
Proficiency
(appx.9-12 years)
  Prerequisites: Level 5 or demonstrated competency in Level 5.

Couse objective: To refine strokes so participants swim them with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness and over greater distances. To teach students how to prevent aquatic emergencies in various aquatic environments. To introduce and practice self-rescue techniques . There are THREE tracts individuals in this course may follow. Personal Water Safety, Fitness Swimmer, and Fundamentals of Diving. Class size: 4
 
Teen A
  This class is developed for teens 12-16 years of age. This is a foundation level course. Class size—2
 
Teen B
  This class is for teens 12-16 years who are proficient in Free and Back, and wanting to learn breast and fly. Class size-4.
 
Adult Beginner/Novice
(17 years and older)
  This class is dedicated to those adults who have limited or no previous swimming experience and designed to help the adult gain confidence in the water.
Class size— 2
 
Adult Intermediate
(17 years and older)
  This class is for adults who are comfortable in the water, will submerge their body and face totally underwater, float on front and back unassisted and can swim a short distance with freestyle or a variety of strokes. The objective of this course is to help improve the mechanics of each swimmer’s strokes. Class size—4

Make Ups:
  Please leave Fridays open in the event that a makeup is necessary due to pool maintenance, weather, or Instructor illness. Other than these reasons, there are NO make up classes!
